Overview
This policy explains how oXnames handles domain name renewals and expiry. Domain names are registered for fixed periods. If a domain is not renewed before its expiry date, services connected to it may stop working, including websites, DNS and email.
Different domain extensions have different registry rules. The timelines below are general guidance and may vary depending on the extension and registry.
Renewal reminders
We send renewal reminders to the email address held on the customer account before a domain expires. These reminders are intended to help customers renew in good time.
- Customers should keep their account email address up to date.
- Not receiving a reminder does not remove the customer's responsibility to renew the domain.
- Customers can check renewal dates from their oXnames account.
Auto-renewal
Where auto-renewal is enabled and a valid payment method is available, we may attempt to renew the domain before expiry. If payment fails, the domain may not renew and may expire unless the customer completes payment manually.
Customers can manage auto-renewal settings from their account where available. Renewal charges are normally non-refundable once the domain has been renewed at the registry.
Manual renewal
If auto-renewal is disabled, customers must manually renew the domain before the expiry date. We recommend renewing at least several days before expiry to avoid any interruption caused by payment, account or registry delays.
What happens when a domain expires?
If a domain expires, it may stop resolving and services connected to it may stop working. This can affect websites, email delivery, DNS records and any third-party systems using the domain.
Some domains may enter a grace period where renewal is still possible. Other domains may move quickly into redemption, suspension, deletion or release depending on registry rules.
Redemption and restoration
If a domain enters redemption or a similar registry recovery period, restoring it may involve additional registry charges. Restoration is not always guaranteed and may depend on the domain extension, registry rules and timing.
If you need to recover an expired domain, contact support as soon as possible. We will explain the available options and any applicable fees before proceeding.
Customer responsibility
Customers are responsible for monitoring their domain expiry dates, maintaining valid contact details, keeping payment methods current, and renewing domains they wish to keep.
oXnames is not responsible for loss of a domain where renewal was not completed in time due to outdated contact details, failed payment, disabled auto-renewal or customer delay.
