An expired domain may stop your website, DNS and email from working. Grace, redemption and release rules vary between domain extensions.

01

Overview

Every domain is registered for a fixed period. If it is not renewed, it may expire and stop resolving, which can interrupt associated websites, DNS and email. Expiry, grace, redemption and deletion rules are set by the relevant registry and differ between extensions.

02

Renewal reminders

We send renewal information to the email address recorded on your oXnames account. You must keep that address current and able to receive messages.

Not receiving a reminder does not remove your responsibility to renew. You should monitor renewal dates in Knox and maintain your own record of business-critical domains.

03

Automatic renewal

Where automatic renewal is enabled and a valid recurring payment method is available, we may attempt to collect payment before expiry. An unsuccessful payment does not renew the domain; you must make payment manually or replace the payment method before the deadline.

You can manage automatic renewal from your account. Registry renewal charges are normally non-refundable once the renewal has been completed.

04

Manual renewal

A domain that is not set to renew automatically must be renewed manually before expiry. We recommend completing renewal several days early so there is time to resolve payment, registry or account issues.

05

What happens after expiry

An expired domain may stop resolving immediately or enter an expiry or grace phase. Depending on the extension, it may later be suspended, enter redemption, be deleted or become available for registration by another person.

We cannot guarantee continued operation, recovery or ownership of a domain after its expiry date.

06

Redemption and restoration

Some registries allow an expired domain to be restored during a redemption period. Restoration can involve additional registry and administration fees and is not guaranteed. Contact Knox Support as soon as possible if a domain has expired.

07

Customer responsibility

You are responsible for monitoring expiry dates, maintaining accurate contact and payment details, enabling or disabling automatic renewal as required and paying renewal invoices on time.

oXnames is not responsible for a lost domain or interrupted service resulting from outdated contact details, a failed payment, disabled auto-renewal or a delay in requesting renewal or restoration.
